Adam Lambert to Front Queen After All
  • Years ago, I think this was batted around for him. I guess he wanted to see how far his solo star could rise and maybe wasn't as meteoric as he had hoped. I, formone, am glad about this- I wanted this from the beginning. There will never be another Freddie but I think Adam can really let lose and show all of his potential with this role. Should be fun!

  • Well, this is about a big time a gig as you can get, and hopefully he does his own thing because there is no replacing Mercury.

Paul Rodgers did a pretty good job too IMO and he's a legend..... Did not try to be Freddie to his credit.
  • Agreed. I think Adam is quirky and funky in his own right and has an amazing , but not "copycat" voice, so I always thought it could be magic.

  • I thought George Michael did a pretty good job, a much better fit than Rodgers, imho.

I thought he did great too. I don't know that he's the guy to take the reins for longer tours though. A great performance nevertheless.

  • GM knocked it out of the park that night. No one touched him. I'm interested in hearing what this Adam Lambert fellow can do, I know he's a little partial to some guyliner, which I'm a fan of. If he can do it, I may even be tempted to go see them.

Paul Rodgers is good, but was a terrible fit, IMO.
  • Thread drift. Doesn't the lead of Iron and Wine sound just like George Michael in this track?

  • Ooh, thanks for reminding me of that! GM is awesome and that is an amazing performance. I do think Adam can be as good.
  • This thread caused me to look this video up, since I thought that Annie Lennox was a great "substitution" for Freddie Mercury, in this song with David Bowie.

And when I saw that it was from a tribute concert from 20 years ago, well ...

You're right in some ways- perhaps the biggest being the voice I guess. But he's a pro and he brings it, so for folks that wanted some live Queen he was a blessing.

Crazy. Big bump for Idol. They have a guy stepping into a monster role.

  • Adam Lambert is arguably the most talented Idol to ever come from the show.
  • Well, that is certainly arguable!
  • Argue then!
  • Do you have to win to be called Idol? Lambert didn't win.
  • Who cares.
  • He clearly got his exposure there. Oddly enough he's been my favorite guy on the show (I watch very infrequently however) and also my fathers....so he's got that white dude over 30 demo nailed.....and, well.....Queen does too.

  • I think Daughtry was better and he has had a bigger solo career post idol.
  • Daughtry is many more years past Idol....Adam Lambert is only 2 years past.
  • Carrie Underwood.
  • Boring. Typical.
  • I guess boring. Typical. Is my style. I like Carrie, Daughtry, and Kelly. Not so much Fantasia, Adam, etc. Talent is def there, but that doesn't mean I can stand to listen to it.
  • I always site Queen as the greatest concert I've ever attended. I've seen all of the heavy hitters in the 70's. No one could touch them. Check out the Queen DVD Live at Wembley. Mercury has no equal with regard to vocal prowess and stage presence.
  • I like Carrie, Kelly & Daughtry too and think they are talented but run of the mill, dime a dozen talented. I agree Adam had the best voice by far and is the one that had the most charisma & showmanship. And I don't think we have seen anywhere near what he is capable of yet- his album was just a wee bit too "pop"- I think if they would have let him rip, it would have been amazing.
  • Carrie Underwood, by a mile.
  • Adam Lambert has stratospheric talent. However, imho, he lacks all rock cred. He's a product of American Idol. Early Queen was amazing bona fide ROCK, where Freddie established his greatness and then built even further upon it as the years went on. Lambert, again imho, is this generation's Sam Harris. Inserting him into Queen works from a talent level, but sucks the rock completely out of the band, 'far as I'm concerned. While Paul Rodgers' voice was less a match, his rock instincts and presence worked better for my taste than Adam Lambert will, despite Lambert's undeniably immense talent. I can see Lambert in a We Will Rock You tribute, but not in the actual band. That's just me.

  • I don't know. I think he can rock. I think he was pushed too far pop because it was idol. We'll see
  • Marc Martel is amazing and I believe was vying for the job. Lambert has the notoriety though.
Lets see if I remember how to upload from Youtube!
  • Wow...I can't remember how to post from youtube! A little help? I remember having to change some setting (html?) here on MOL but can't find where to do that.
  • Got it! It's been simplified! Check this guy out! He's also been on The Ellen Show.
  • Sorry, he's got a similar voice, but this leaves me cold. No personality comes through.
  • Yep, kind of like the Journey guy. That's why I like Adam-talent & personality & charisma
  • I'll probably be flamed for saying this but Queen should just give up finding a new front man. I can see guest singers but no one will ever replace Freddie Mercury for my money. For me, it never was about his showmanship but about his beautiful and powerful voice. He was in a class all by himself. I was not impressed with Paul Rodgers as their front man and Adam Lambert? Please do not disrespect Freddie's memory like this.
  • I agree that to try to find someone to sing the music of Queen, with the original band, that sounds and looks like Freddie, is probably the wrong approach. I think it's exciting to witness someone like Marc Martel do justice to the music. I think he exhibits more charisma in this clip, but, no, not to the level of Mr. Mercury!
  • I don't think Adam looks or sounds a thng like Freddie. Other than them both being male and dark-haired. I agree that no one can replace Freddie -one of my favorite singers of all time. But I would like to see the music performed again and if Adam can bring something unique to it, I am excited.

  • I had the opportunity to ask Adam Lambert about this today.

I asked him if it was true....he said he cannot confirm or deny it, because, honestly, he has a record of his own to promote. I then asked him if, hypothetically it was true, would he try to channel Freddie Mercury or keep it Adam Lambert and he was very clear, it would be an injustice and an insult to try to imitate Freddy Mercury. But he had such a blast performing with them in the past that he'd love to bring his own flavor to the band, while energizing the songs and filling people with the memory of Mercury.

Oh, and I got to chat with him about some other things too, but now I'm just bragging...
  • Lucky you! He said on an interview the other day that he was " doing something" with Queen this year but that he couldn't announce it. But that it was not ( at this point ) a permanent gig type thing but more of a special thing.
  • Yes, thats what he said again. He wants it to be clear his own gig comes first.
  • Is he as nice as he comes across?
  • He is the SWEETEST, most affable man. I was shocked. He's a total doll. I expected some attitude, some ego. There was none. He was simply the sweetest thing.
  • I keep reading the thread title as Adam Lambert is the Front Queen, like the queeniest one of all.
  • And not to belabor this (can you tell I'm kvetching?) but when we talked about Queen he graciously donned his wax lips and stache to look more like Freddy:
