  • Hey, it's that time of year when the yard sales start heating up! Has anyone seen or used this http://gsalr.com/garage-sales-new-york-ny.html ?

  • Anyone know if a garage sale posted solely on MOL classifieds - no advertising elsewhere - is effective?
  • mtierney, we had a couple of garage sales, and many people came because of our newspaper ads and not our MOL ad. So unfortunately, MOL alone isn't enough if you want as big a turnout as possible. But maybe you don't.
  • Agree, same experience ... no diss on MOL, I would definitely do an MOL ad but also do local newspaper ads in M/SO and surrounding towns if you want high turnout.
  • Oh, cool--thanks for that link!!!
  • My thinking on this would be a "controlled" sale - one day, actually with the stuff IN the garage, so weather would not be an issue.

I've had sales, and helped out at many others, and it's a very labor intensive project!
  • We had great luck with MOL advertising alone (and some street signs)
  • Here's an estate sale by (E)Sale: http://www.estatesales.net/estate-sales/101295.aspx
Friday and Saturday, in Short Hills.

  • this was yesterday and today only. looks cool! http://www.estatesales.net/estate-sales/98826.aspx

Dawson and Nye Auction house is becoming Nye & Company auctioneers and relocating to Montclair.
  • They've done those before. I wouldn't go in thinking they'll be a major find, however, given they usually have everything priced well, but not crazy bargain-level. Head to Short Hills today... there are at least four or five.
  • I downloaded a free iPhone app for yard sales. It shows a map and directions of how to get to the address of the yard sale and shows listings for near and far...it's really cool!

Just go to the search for applications under "Yard Sales".

oh no, that sounds way too cool! I need an iPhone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • ctrzaska, (or anyone else) do you go to auctions? are there any good auctions? what do you think about auctions? do you buy stuff from ebay or any other online auctions?
  • My mom has bought some stuff from a person in the southwest (where she lives) who apparently gets everything at auctions in/around Repaupo. Here's a link to one of the big auctions there.

  • Posted By: crazy_quilterctrzaska, (or anyone else) do you go to auctions? are there any good auctions? what do you think about auctions? do you buy stuff from ebay or any other online auctions?

I do go to auctions, but they're mostly the better ones and only if I know a handful of things are going to be there that I'd want. The larger ones are eithe rall filled with furniture, some of it poorly restored or reproduction stuff, and others on the lower expense range often have tons of crap to weed through and they take FOREVER. Many are also filled with dealers, FWIW. Not a huge fan. eBay for small things that catch my eye, but not usually.
  • seems like a nearly empty weekend
  • Yeah, I figured. I found 2 in SO for tomorrow, I think. I get so excited about garage sales! I've never been to an auction, ctrzaska! Sounds exciting. Has anyone ever been to a Wendy Sands sale? I've seen her name in the paper forever, and then last week I went to one -- NEVER WILL I ATTEND AGAIN! First off, she was just like the rudest person, and most everything was supremely overpriced. She was so rude. Maybe I caught her on a bad day, but I mean REALLY REALLY REALLY rude.
  • I haven't been in awhile, (Wendy Sands), but I don't remember her being rude. I remember offering her 1/2 of whatever price she had on a few small items and she took the offer. maybe she was having a bad day. or maybe things aren't going well.

ctrzaska, what auctions do you like? (or is that like giving out the name of your babysitter?)

Next weekend should be pretty big for yard sales.

I'm in Texas. I just put 3 of my dad's things on ebay and plan to put more on tomorrow nite.
    here's one auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250608258779&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
If you have any suggestions to improve, please feel free to make them. Last time I misspelled "Firkin" or Firken and I think that cost me alot of dough!
  • Don't think this misspelling will lose you any money, but just in case: enamel.
  • thanks, i thought it looked odd, and checked it, but I must have looked at another ad with the same misspelling!
  • Yer welcome. Cool shakers.
  • well, she definitely lost this customer - I mean ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. And definitely not flexible with any prices, she wanted $10 for a necklace!

good luck with your ebay auctions, cq! i would put anohter pic of the back of those shakers up, to show more, but it looks like you have lots of bids already! i hear those "black memorabilia" things can be worth a lot of $
  • Wendy can be a bit brusque, to say the least. But that's who she is and she doesn't apologise for it. For certain things she's way overpriced, and she does have her preferred group she deals with (many do), but I've gotten some great deals at her sales, paticularly on Saturdays (same for most). Many of her sales, however, tend to be of the cleanout type, it seems, and I'm not that into wearing boots to dig through a house. I generally prefer Mary's or Carolyn's sales.

cq - Dawson & Nye (NJ), and Sotheby's, Doyle, Guernsey in NYC.
  • Does anyone remember when MOL had an auction type thing going on for items? I don't think it attracted many bidders, but it might work now.
  • has anyone tried www.igavel.com?

when I open the site the first one I see is Remmey which is located here in NJ.

Any other online auctions besides eBay that anyone here uses or knows about? I may need to start a thread to ask. I am expecting to have some brand new furniture to sell soon.

  • here are the sales this weekend that are listed in the MOL classifieds (nothing on Friday, hmmm). I'll try to list other ones I see, too:
Montclair: Sat 9-3p.m. 2 Burnside St
Maplewood: Sat Hudson Ave between Garfield and Parker 4 to 5 houses
    Sat 19 bowdoin st
    Sat 9 to 4p.m. , 676/ 678 Prospect (two family)

South Orange: Sat and Sun 10 to 5 12 Briar Court
Sat & Sun 376 Grove Road

    Sun only 9 to 3 p.m, 5 & 7 New England Road
  • your avatar creeps me.
  • i know. everytime I see it, I think it doesn't go with my comments. Blame it on lars, she said my last avatar was scaring people
  • I love this new one!!!! YAY!
  • c_q you are WIGGING ME OUT with your constantly changing avatar!
  • It looks like there are going to be 2 separate garage sales on Plymouth Avenue as well this Saturday... one at 33 Plymouth Ave, and one at 53 Plymouth Ave
  • I think CQ quilted her new avatar... out of hair
  • how many people use http://www.estatesales.net/ ?

what yards sales do you see for this weekend?

There is a big rummage sale at 200 Main St., Chatham, NJ (St. Paul’s Episcopal Church) on Saturday, May 7th.

I like sales for charity because people aren't as attached to the items and they don't remember how much it cost originally, and I feel like that while I may be hoarding, I am also donating to something that might do some good in the world...

There is the Visiting Nurse Association Sale which seems to be about 1/2 hour away at the Far Hills Fairground, May 6, 7 and 8.

  • I have been to the Visiting Nurse Ass'n Sale in the past---Huge! Everything from soup to nuts. It is worth the trip!
  • If anyone goes, I may have a list... AWESOME sale. Get there EARLY, expect tons of traffic leading in (one lane) and parking on dirt/grass.
  • Funny to see the Visiting Nurse sale mentioned here. At the Maplewood house tour last weekend, I was admiring the wonderful funky furniture in the blue house, and the docent told me she got everything over the years at the VNA sale. It meant nothing to me at the time, but now that I see another recommendation I guess I'd better head over there tomorrow.
  • ctrzaska, what are you looking for?
  • I'm looking for a danish modern dining room set (I'm kind of specific about what I want). Would it be crazy to think they'd have something like that at the VNA sale? I don't know that I want to deal with traffic and crazy parking if there's not a good furniture selection.

Edited to say, yes I understand you never _really_ know at rummage sales.

  • caboose, I've never been to this sale, but my understanding is that they have different tents for each category of item, and I'm sure there is a furniture tent. But, as you say, there's no way to predict what they'll have from one year to the next.

You may do better on craigslist for that kind of search. In fact, I just found one here. Don't know what your budget is, but $1200 for a dining room set all up is not bad, and the guy is even offering delivery with that price.

Actually, I just noticed that the guy listed it again for only $1000.

  • Okay, I'm really starting to fall into the abyss, but this sounds like a fun yard sale if you're willing to drive to Glen Rock - about 30+ minutes from here. Sort of reminds me of the one c_q ran on Academy the other week.

Personally, I'm planning to go to the NJ State History Fair on Saturday.
  • Personally, I'm planning to go to theNJ State History Fairon Saturday.
that looks cool! too bad i'm so busy this weekend!
  • Jasper, thanks. I check craigslist about 400 times a day (is that perhaps too much?). I have my eye on a couple, but nothing is just right yet. Or perhaps I just can't pull the trigger yet...

I think I'm going to pass on this sale, but maybe I'll make it to the next one... I'm starting to get back into the fun of estate sales, which is nice.
  • A sale is good at least two times: at the very beginning when no one else has had a chance to scoop the treasures, and at the end when everything is greatly reduced in price!
The VNA sale is on for 3 days. if i make it out on Friday, i'll try to take some pix.

This is the first year they're having it at Allaire State Park. In previous years it was held at Washington Crossing near Lambertville, then last year there weren't enough funds and the event was canceled altogether. If I do go, I'll report back how it was at the new venue. It's a wonderful event, especially for kids in the 5-10 year old range. And there are some shopportunities for olde-timey things like canvas water buckets, old fashioned games and toys, and other such items.
